Our story

The Home of Chess in the Maldives

Starting with a borrowed board in an island nation known more for lagoons than chess, the Maldives Chess Club grew from informal games into a structured community. By teaching youth across the atolls to think ahead and stay calm under pressure, the club uses the game as an equalizer.

The club isn’t chasing titles or trophies for their own sake. It’s chasing something slower and more lasting — a generation of Maldivian kids who know what it feels like to think three moves ahead, to lose gracefully, to win with humility, and to realize that a game invented centuries ago still has something to teach them. If a future Maldivian grandmaster is out there, there’s a good chance they haven’t picked up a piece yet. This club is trying to make sure that when they do, there’s a place waiting for them.

Common questions

Do you sell chess-related products?
Yes! We offer a range of chess equipment suitable for tournaments, clubs, schools, and serious players, including tournament-standard chess boards, chess clocks, notation books, and other chess essentials.

Keep an eye on our website and social media for available products and new stock!
How do I enter a tournament?
Entries are taken by the club directly rather than through this website. Call us, send an email, or come and see us at a session and we will put your name down. You will find our number and address further down this page.
Does the club provide private tutoring?
We don’t provide private tutoring directly, but we act as a gateway between parents, young players, and local chess coaches.

Give us a call, and we’ll help connect you with a coach who’s best suited to your needs, skill level, and goals.

We believe chess should be accessible to everyone, and we’re here to help make finding the right support as easy as possible.
What is your mission?
Our mission is simple: to make chess accessible to everyone.

We believe chess should never be locked behind a closed community or limited to those who already know their way around the sport. Everyone should have the opportunity to learn, play, compete, and improve.

We believe in transparency, inclusivity, and progression, and we want to help build a stronger and more open chess community in the Maldives.
Can I register my school or organisation for an event?
Can I register my school or organisation for an event?

Absolutely! We work with schools and organisations to create and host chess events tailored specifically to them.

Whether you’re looking for a school tournament, an inter-organisation competition, or a fun chess activity for your community, we can help plan and run the event from start to finish.

Get in touch with us, tell us what you have in mind, and we’ll help bring it to the board.
Do you partner with island councils for atoll programs or workshops?
Yes! We work with island councils to bring chess programs, workshops, and activities directly to communities across the Maldives.

We’ve already had the opportunity to conduct programs in Adh. Dhangethi and Fuvahmulah, and we’re looking forward to working with more councils and bringing chess to even more islands.

If your council is interested in a chess program, get in touch with us — we’d love to hear from you!

Not answered here? Give us a call or drop in — we would rather hear from you directly.
